Formed in 1981 in the deepest underground, Metallica has become one of the biggest and most influential acts in musical history, having sold nearly 120 million albums worldwide while playing to millions of fans on all seven continents. Their multi-platinum discography includes 1991's “Metallica” (commonly referred to as The Black Album), with sales of over 35 million copies globally (17 million in the U.S. alone). Their latest album, “Hardwired...to Self-Destruct,” released on November 18, 2016 on their own Blackened Recordings label, charted at #1 in 32 countries.
Metallica has also garnered numerous awards and accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009. At UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, our dedication to groundbreaking research and compassionate care has driven all that we do for more than a century. The trailblazers, visionaries, crusaders, and champions at our hospitals charge hard at the toughest problems facing kids and deliver incredible results, time and again. We’ve pioneered precision cures for deadly cancers, created a low-cost meningitis vaccine that has been given to more than 100 million people, and conducted a first-of-its-kind gene therapy. Countless breakthroughs are on the horizon. Our incredible community has partnered with us every step of the way. Families come to us for compassion, innovation, and hope — and it takes generous, dedicated supporters to make that possible. Together, there is no limit to what we can achieve for children.
